Self Sufficient Living

Make Sure Your Seeds Are NOT Profiting Monsanto

I am constantly being driven towards self sufficient living by the burdensome, destructive, and stressful ways of this world.

Have you ever gotten fed up with all the hassles, errors, and bondage that comes with being dependent in so many ways on so many people?

Have you ever thought to yourself...

I just want to get away from the overload of accounts, services, fees, credit card companies, greedy or irresponsible people tied to my money, and other pressures, stress, and hassle of reliance on other people and things each day!

Is it possible to sever many of the ties that limit and drain us in order to live a self sufficient life and be free from feeling like a constant target for that which aims to deplete us in every way? Can we get out from under that big THUMB... you know - the thumb.

There's a point when open-minded, strong-willed people (like myself and maybe you, too) know there is a different way to live. A way that is more self-reliant, sustainable, and outside of the cage.

Of all the ways that people are taken advantage of and are pressured to conform to others' expectations...

  • What you should be doing with your life
  • How you should live and eat
  • How your children should be educated
  • What's right for you
...It just makes you want to fully embrace self sufficient living.

The Call of Self Sufficient Living

God works things a certain way in the lives of those who live by faith. We trust that He is yet again preparing us for our next season and "move" in life. We strongly believe that our lives will reflect self sufficient living more and more as we gain more skills and more opportunities.

I want to make it clear that just because I want to live a self sufficient lifestyle, it doesn't mean that I do not seek to be on cue with God's will. I am fully dependent on Him. I am lost without my Savior. I seek to live set apart from the often backwards and unnatural ways of the "masses".

We can't always clearly see beyond today, but we are willing to step out in faith and we have joy and peace in our hearts during this time of waiting, preparation, and seeking.

We know that there is yet more...

Self Sufficiency & People

Self sufficient living is not completely distancing yourself from all traces of human contact. It is important that we form positive relationships with all types of people. Associating with people is not the same as being needlessly dependent on them.

Being self sufficient involves systematically structuring your life as to not needlessly depend on others to meet your needs, especially in ways that harm or subtract from your joy and peace. It's simply providing for yourself what you need to sustain your lifestyle.

Self Sufficient Living Means...

Living off the land, growing or raising a lot of your own food, living naturally, quietly, and at a slower pace; being close to nature, and usually having a "less is more" mentality. Sustainable living on a small farm is often part of the picture.

To many, it also involves building your own house (or fixing up an old farm house), doing the vast majority, if not all, of the labor yourself.

Build Your Own House

Reasons to build your own house:
  • Opportunity to have more house for less money
  • Lower monthly payments
  • Lower cost, therefore lower mortgage balance
  • Secure instant equity in your new home
  • Enjoy the fruits of your own labor and the fulfillment of such an accomplishment!
If you have any desire at all to build your own house, I highly recommend that you visit make-my-own-house.com. Not only does Larry have tons of links to help you with construction, but he wrote a free e-book (I love it; it's so interesting, informative, and inspiring!). And, to top it off, he built his own beautiful house and tells you all about it.

Subterranean Homes

The advantages of living in subterranean homes are substantial. Another name for this type of construction is earth sheltered home.

Other similar types of shelters are earth berm, in-hill construction, and underground/fully recessed construction. A properly designed earth sheltered home can provide you with a very comfortable living space.

Living Small... Really Small

Small and even tiny houses are popular. Check out these tiny house plans and small house floor plans.

Speaking of tiny houses, I have thought a lot about what it would be like to live in a RV for any length of time. Some people just enjoy traveling in RV's and others actually take on RV'ing full-time.

Voluntary Simplicity

E. F. Schumacher summarized

voluntary simplicity by saying,

Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius - and a lot of courage - to move in the opposite direction.

Homesteading Today

When the Homestead Act became law, millions of acres were given to farmers for agricultural use. Although land is no longer free in most of the world, many people are homesteading today by the way they choose to live their life.
