Normal Blood Pressure

A normal blood pressure reading is less than 120/80. The top number is your systolic pressure (pressure exerted during heart beat) and the bottom number is your diastolic pressure (pressure exerted between heart beats).

The bottom or diastolic number is the most important of the two. If your blood pressure is really high even while your heart is at rest compared to when it beats, that's bad.

An easy way to remember which is which is that the first part of the word "diastolic" (pressure between heart beats/while your heart is at rest) sounds like "die" which is what happens when your heart is at rest or stops beating for good.

Blood Pressure Ranges

Systolic: Top Number

Pre hypertension... 120-139

Stage One......... 140-159

Stage Two......... 160 or higher

Diastolic: Bottom Number

Stage Two......... 100 or higher

Results of Not Treating High Blood Pressure

There are several heart problems that can be caused or worsened by your high blood pressure.

  • Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Aneurysm

Prescription Drugs To Normalize Blood Pressure

  • Alpha & Beta Blockers: Reduce nerve impulses to the blood vessels. Possible side effects: headaches, nausea, weakness, pounding heart, weight gain, and more.
  • Ace Inhibitors: Prevent the formation of a chemical that causes the blood vessels to narrow. Side effects include skins rashes, loss of sense of taste, or chronic, dry cough.
  • Diuretics: Removes fluid and salt from the body. Downside: Flushes out the good (nutrients) with the bad.
  • Vasodilators: dilates the blood vessels. Can initially cause headaches, swelling around eyes, heart palpitations, joint pain. Long term effect is extreme weight gain.

If you are taking blood pressure medicine, talk to your doctor before you stop taking your medicine. With your doctor, you should be able to make a plan to discontinue the use of blood pressure medication and begin to naturally obtain a normal blood pressure.

  • Get down to a healthy weight.
Calculate your BMI (Body Mass Index) The ideal BMI range is 18.5-24.9.

  • Do moderate, physical activity for about 1/2 and hour at least 5 days a week.
  • Eat a balanced diet. For a simple change, replace refined table salt (raises blood pressure and has no essential trace elements) with sea salt (very rarely raises blood pressure and has nutrients important to your health). Reduce your consumption of packaged foods (typically high in refined salt).

  • Learn stress management techniques. When I became overwhelmed with stress and anxiety, my blood pressure went up.

When I was at my worst, I realized I had to change the way I responded to my daughter (a toddler at the time) and other stressful situations in my life.

Through a combination of dealing more calmly and skillfully with my daughter, using the "One Move" technique from Panic Away, and focusing more on natural health, I was able to manage stress and get back down to a healthy, normal blood pressure.

  • Eat foods high in potassium, magnesium, and calcium. Remember to use sea salt instead of table salt.
  • Garlic is great for your heart, blood pressure, and cholesterol. If you don't like to eat a lot of garlic, you can take garlic supplements.
  • Eating fish 2 or 3 times a week or taking fish oil (Omega 3 fatty acid) is great for the heart.
  • Green tea, even in small amounts each day, is well-known to promote normal blood pressure levels.
