Off grid-ers collect and use renewable solar energy. That is, they trap the sun's rays and convert it into electricity. You should have properly stored/protected batteries to retain excess electricity. It's beneficial to have a generator on hand for stronger power needs.

Generating your own solar energy as opposed to being on the grid does not mean you have to make big changes in your lifestyle.
