Laser Hair Removal At Home... At Last!

I first became interested in laser hair removal at home when I saw an advertisement online for a chance to win up to $3,000 worth of laser hair removal treatments (at a doctor's office).

Wow! My impression was not that's a great deal! it was laser hair removal treatments must be outrageously expensive since what was being offered was only a portion of the treatments the average person would want done!

I decided, just out of curiosity, to try to find a product that I could use at home that would permanently remove unwanted hair (I absolutely despise shaving), but that I would even remotely consider paying the price for. Well, as frugal as I am, I decided to try a product called Tria.

Benefits of Tria For Laser Hair Removal At Home:
(From Tria Beauty)

  • Smooth Skin
  • After using the TRIA laser, the skin looks and feels smoother and softer than ever before - just like the hair was never there.

  • Convenient
  • No more inconvenient appointments. No more endless waxing and shaving. Wake up and wear what you like, when you like. No more timing vacations and important events around the last time you waxed or shaved!

  • Simple To Use
  • Simply turn on the TRIA Laser and apply it to the skin - it's that simple! No complicated instructions.

  • Save Money

The TRIA system delivers the same long-lasting results at a fraction of the cost of professional treatments.

Journal: My Tria Experience

I ordered my Tria on Nov. 21, 2009. I received it from Fed Ex on Nov. 28, 2009. The shipping would have been even sooner except for the Thanksgiving holiday.

I activated my Tria laser online (super easy). I followed the instructions to test a few spots on my skin, at different power settings, just to make sure I didn't have a reaction. 24 hours later my skin had NO reaction so I proceeded with the first treatment.

Below are the basics of using the Tria system to give you an idea of what to expect along with my personal experience. Read the actual instructions carefully before you use your Tria.

*Unfortunately, Tria is not for people with dark skin tones. Please refer to the Tria website to find out if the Tria laser is right for you.

Step 1: Get as close a shave as you can in the area you are going to treat.

Step 2: Turn on and unlock the laser (safety feature that takes a couple of seconds). Choose the highest power level you can tolerate. Get comfortable. The treatments are very simple, but do take time.

I estimate that it takes me about 1 1/2 hours to fully treat my body. I break this up over two days. This is primarily because the laser needs to be charged often (after about 20-25 minutes of use) and takes three hours to fully charge.

You aren't held to a strict schedule for the treatments; just as long as you do the amount of recommended treatments per month (every other week for first three months, then once a month for up to five months). Also, shave right before you do each treatment to reduce discomfort.

TRIA Beauty. Stop shaving. Stop waxing.
You’re just 6-8 months away from a hair-free existence!

When To Expect Results

Because hair grows in cycles, don't expect to notice a change in hair growth after the first month (2 treatments). But, you may notice the hair beginning to come in more slowly and finer after the second month (4 treatments).

If this sounds daunting, don't be discouraged from using it. It's just like making bread; most of the time is spent waiting. And the rewards of making a loaf of bread cannot begin to compare to the rewards of laser hair removal at home! Once your treatments are done - you're done!

Treatment Procedure

Once your laser is on, unlocked, and set at your desired level, begin the treatment by gently pressing the laser surface (about 1/2 inch diameter) against your skin. The laser will beep when it makes full contact, then flash and beep again. That's one pulse. Move the laser over about 1/4 inch (overlapping the previous treated area) and make contact again and so on.

*The cooling fan turns on and off frequently, both during use and charging, so don't be startled by it. :)

You have to keep a general sense of the area you have already treated as you move along your skin. It's okay if you miss some spots inadvertently, you can always do specific touch ups in later treatments when it's obvious that some stray hairs are still growing. For each laser pulse there are no buttons to push. Just relax, hold onto the laser, make contact, pick it up, move it over, and make contact again.

Is It Painful?

I used the highest setting for the first few treatments because I wanted the best, quickest results. For the most part, I felt nothing or mild discomfort. Sometimes, as when I didn't get a close shave or I have an ingrown hair, the laser zap can be quite painful on such a high setting. I have backed off and now use setting 3 or 4 more often for comfort.

But, that just reminds me of why I am doing laser hair removal at home in the first place! I want to get to the point where I don't have to shave anymore and deal with razor burn and poor results! Additionally, I can at any moment during a treatment, lower the power level.

I was going to write a "step 3", but I don't really need to. Just keep track of what treatments you have done using the provided stickers and calender or use your own calendar.

Laser Hair Removal At Home Treatment 2 of ~11:

Monday, 12/14/09 & Tuesday, 12/15/09

Using the Tria laser is incredibly simple. I have no redness or any other signs that I have treated my skin. I feel like I have plenty of time between treatments and I anticipate great success.

Treatment 3 of ~11:

Sunday, 12/27/09 & Monday, 12/28/09

They tell you not to expect noticeable results until after the second month of laser hair removal at home, but after only two treatments (one month), I can already see some changes in the hair growth on my legs. There are patches of hair that have barely grown out and many hairs are getting finer!

Treatment 4 of ~11:

Monday, 1/11/10 & Tuesday, 1/12/10

Another simple treatment. It's really easy to get the hang of. After the first treatment I didn't need to use the instructions anymore.

Treatment 5 of ~11:

Monday, 1/25/10 & Tuesday, 1/26/10

Still making progress.

Treatment 6 of ~11:

Monday, 2/8/10 & Tuesday, 2/9/10

More progress... Less and less hair grows back and most of what does grow back comes in slower and finer.

Update: June 4, 2010

I have a few more laser hair removal at home treatments to go. I still do one laser hair removal treatment at home each month. I usually start out using the laser on the coarser hairs, then do the overall treatment in order to reinforce the hairs I didn't cover as well in past treatments. I keep looking forward to never having to shave the treated areas again. :)
