How To Get Organized

The basics of how to get organized

Getting organized is simply grouping relative items together and storing or displaying them in a way that makes them easy to access as well as comforting to view.

Before you organize any space, make sure you are through decluttering so you are not attempting to organize the clutter. Reduce what you have and you will reduce what you have to move around every day to get to what you actually want and need.

If you try to organize clutter, you'll end up shoving a bunch of stuff in all directions; filling every available space and leaning up against every horizontal foot of wall. Leaving empty space around objects is one of my home organization tips.

After decluttering, follow these steps on how to get organized:

1) Focus on one area at a time

The more time you have to organize at one time, the more area you can cover. Or, the more involved the organizing task, the more area you may need to cover at once to prevent having stuff laying around until you get around to finishing the other half of the job.

Remember, sometimes things get temporarily worse before they get better. It will only seems bad for a while, but it is a part of the process and is a positive sign of progress.

For instance, if you're not ready to tackle the whole job of closet organization, you can focus on getting a section of shelves or drawers just the way you want them. On the other hand, if you are organizing kitchen cabinets and want to switch the contents of several cabinets, you may want to do it all at once.

2) Take everything out from the space you are currently organizing

I find this method a very effective way to thoroughly declutter as well as organize. If you are directly following up decluttering with organizing, you will already have everything out.

3) Clean the empty space by mopping or wiping down all surfaces

Now we're really feeling clean and fresh! These simple easy homemade cleaners are eco friendly, quick to make and frugal for your simple lifestyle.

4) Put it all back

Think about how you want the space to function. Neatly arrange everything by grouping like items together. Not only is it visually appealing, but it helps you to find what you need.
