Disadvantages of Homeschooling

Challenges & Disadvantages of Homeschooling

  • Parent having confidence in their own and their child’s ability.
  • You don't have to be a perfect parent with perfect children. If you love your children, like to do activities such as reading with them, and are willing to do the necessary research and planning to prepare, you can do it.

It's not impossible for an ordinary parent to properly homeschool their child. You may be discouraged by what are to you the biggest disadvantages of homeschooling, but their are plenty of resources. By the way, thousands of ordinary parents have and are successfully doing it!

Since birth, your child has been taught by you. Just continue seeing yourself as their main life teacher. The older they get, the more and different things you will teach them. I want to encourage you with these resources.

  • Public and/or family criticism.
  • You are going to stand out. Many people don't fully understand homeschooling, therefore be aware that negative and critical comments will, to some degree, come your way. Develop a thick skin (and merciful heart) and know that you are doing a wonderful thing by properly homeschooling your child.

  • Adjusting career goals and work schedules.
  • Typically, homeschooling means one parent works full time and the other homeschools. If you are a single parent or have another situation, you just have to be more creative with your resources.

However, many families find that it is worth such adjustments to be able to watch their kids grow up and experience the special moments of life and learning.

  • Time commitment needed to prepare lessons and provide opportunities for the child.
  • Remember, "providing opportunities" means driving your child to and from field trips, lessons, and classes. It means planning and participating which takes time and effort.

But, when you compare it to a typical public school family, this may not stand out as one of the real disadvantages of homeschooling.

Many public school parents run themselves ragged keeping up with their child's activities. If you homeschool, you should be able to take your time and not feel so rushed as you might be if you had to squeeze activities in after 6-8 hours of public school.

  • Be prepared and willing to spend most of your time with your children.
  • I look at this challenge this way. It has been awesome seeing all the changes in my daughter since birth that everyone else misses. I will continue to enjoy experiencing her development, moment by moment.

It shouldn't be strange for a parent and child to be together during the child's developmental years before adulthood and to have a good relationship. Spending this time together can develop personal and family growth. You can be creative and persistent about making time for yourself.

If homeschooling is for you, I hope I have been able to strengthen your resolve and extinguish your fears. On the other hand, you may think of more disadvantages that need settling before you feel comfortable. In that case, just continue to compare them to the advantages of homeschooling as well as other resources and get the answers and support you need to make your best decision. :)
