Can I Do Homeschooling?
Can I Do Homeschooling? Yes! You most certainly can. Do you love your child and want what's best for them? Homeschooling basically only needs to consist of a few things...
A love for your child A willingness to read to and enjoy great books with your child. (New, expensive books and even curriculum are not necessary. Inexpensive, used books are usually easy to find.) A willingness to rearrange or rethink some of your commitments and ideas about what true education can look like (hint: not like an institution). :) A willingness to expose your child (not force them to participate-especially the younger the child is) to a variety of interesting information, materials, and activities. NOTE: Some states (if you live in the U.S.) have more homeschool regulations than others, so be sure to become familiar with your
state's law.
As I write this, I homeschool in Texas which, as far as the law goes, is one of the several homeschool friendly states. Naturally, there are common, uncertain aspects for parents. Just remember that people are born with a natural curiosity and drive to learn about the world around them. You would have to purposely keep them from learning for them not to learn a lot every day. From my personal public school experience and research it's often the government-run school systems that hamper learning and true retention and appreciation of all the facets of a generally well-rounded education. So, though it seems contrary to popular belief, keeping a child out of school is very likely to improve both a child's overall life and well being as well as their love for and capacity to learn. Otherwise, what they learn as you lovingly lead them should be great for preparing them for life. Another reminder as you ponder the question of Can I do homeschooling is that preparing them for real life is the goal, not for a test at school. Children don't need to be taught-at all day long, they thrive off of interaction with their loved ones and people of varying ages. Give them freedom to be themselves and learn at their own pace. Can I Do Homeschooling... Yes, because life is your classroom I have been officially homeschooling since 2010. That's when my daughter turned five and was ready for kindergarten. But homeschooling is a lifestyle that begins when a child is born. I say this because you can go seamlessly from one age to the next without noticing a big shift in how they learn (if you go the relaxed route). The teaching/learning begins when they're born, not just when they turn five and start what we know as kindergarten. My daughter is well on her way, even ahead, academically, but she has never been to school and we don't do "school" at home. How can that be?! ;) I just help her to learn more about what she's interested in and introduce her to what I would like her to learn about; Letting her learn important information in a way that she is most interested in and makes the most sense to her. Makes sense to me... But, I don't think academics is the only important aspect of learning and developing. Self control, honesty, compassion, cultivating a love for the learning process, going the extra mile, excellent social skills, and manners, for example, are my idea of a well-developed, well-rounded child. Those areas have to be taught consistently and on purpose. It doesn't happen by mere peer submersion. Especially not by peer submersion. I want to make clear that my strong opinions stated here are not intended to condemn parents for sending their child to public school. But I do want to at least help everyone realize that our public school system (in general) has been failing in many ways and for many years and to give serious consideration to the type of environment they put their child in full-time. My intention is to stand up for home education for being the gem that it is. It is a viable option and, if done lovingly, has numerous benefits for the child and family. Homeschooling gives you a much different perspective. The whole world opens up to you. Except now, you as the parent have more of a say as to how your child explores and learns about it. As a homeschool parent, it is up to you to facilitate learning in every way you can, but you are not alone and it's not such a difficult or complicated task. I hope I helped to resolve the "Can I Do Homeschooling" question for you. Enjoy the adventure.
