6 Benefits of Gardening

I was pulling up weeds (clover) one day when I began to consider the many benefits of gardening. I realized it was actually therapeutic because, unlike many other weeds, these easily come out by the root. I thought of many other positive aspects of working outside and especially of tending a produce garden.

Fresh Air

It has been reported that indoor air quality is about 5 times as polluted as outdoor air. So, even if the outdoor air quality in your area isn't great, think about how bad the air is in your home, office, etc. Open your windows as often as you can (30 minutes a day is good) to replace old, stale air with fresh air.

Soil

Getting your fingers into the dirt causes your body to absorb healthful microbes. There many antibiotics in the soil, as well. There are many, many microorganisms living in the soil, plants, and our intestines. It's interesting to consider what Genesis 2:7 says about the LORD God forming man from the dust of the earth.

There is such a thing as being too clean. Our immune systems are weakened by not coming into contact with enough germs. So go ahead, make a mud pie. But you don't have to eat it to get the benefits. :)

Functional Fitness

One of the benefits of gardening is that you obtain natural, functional fitness. personally, I would spend much more time outside pulling weeds, tidying up the yard, or tending to my garden than I would on a treadmill or working out in front of the TV. The time passes much more quickly, too.

Curb Appeal

Improving the appearance and helping your yard and/or garden to thrive is a fulfilling reason to get out and do something... anything!

Harvest of health and savings

Reap benefits of fresh, naturally-grown produce which taste great, cost less, and are more nutritious!

Soothing for the soul

It's relaxing just to get outside. Green is said to be the most relaxing color to look at and green is typically in abundance outdoors; beyond the concrete and buildings.
